News in:'Parang kawayan lang': LP solons eye move to majority

MANILA - The Liberal Party will remain true to its principles should it join the majority in the House of Representatives, Caloocan Rep. Edgar Erice said Thursday.

"Parang kawayan lang, medyo yumuyuko muna nang konti," Erice told ANC's Early Edition.

(Just like a bamboo, we're bowing a little bit.)

"Yung advocacy namin (Our advocacy) on certain issues, like extrajudicial killings, death penalty, lowering of age of criminal liability, anti-cha-cha eh mananatili 'yun (will remain)."

Erice, member of the Liberal Party national executive council, said moving to the House majority will allow their members to participate in committees and deliver projects to their districts.

"We have a very popular president, 85 percent ang kaniyang popularity, trust rating and I empathize with many of our members, especially the first and second-termers, they would want to win in the next elections," he said.

"In terms of getting projects in our districts, it will be better to join the majority."

The House majority could use the input of 18 LP lawmakers on issues such as charter change, Erice said.

"Maybe by being part of the majority, although sabi ko di naman kami nagdedecide (as I said we haven't decided), we can provide some inputs na pwede naman pakinggan ng administration," he said.

"For example, I’m particularly interested in charter change. We can experiment by converting Metro Manila into a metropolitan government. Maybe Davao and Cebu, independent autonomous regional governments."

Erice added that all three House Speaker aspirants have agreed to allow LP members to remain true to their stand on certain issues if they join the majority.

"They all agreed, they said they’re willing to give us leniency when it comes to our core principles," he said.

The LP will decide on its move whether to join the House majority before the President's 4th State of the Nation Address on Monday, he added.

The lawmaker, meanwhile, said he is eyeing the chairmanship of the Metro Manila Development.

"I would pursue my advocacy on creating a more responsive metropolitan government," he said.
