“Let’s not twist facts just to suit a particular agenda,” Secillano said.
“Divorce can never be pro marriage, pro family, and pro children,” he added.
“Is she saying now that the Family Code and our Constitution are anti-family, anti-marriage, and anti-children since they do not guarantee divorce?” he asked.
The CBCP official said divorce would actually lead to the “disintegration” of Filipino families.
“Divorce is a form of ‘ideological colonization’. Filipinos deserve better than something that guarantees the disintegration of Filipino families,” Secillano said.
He, however, admitted that marital relationships are not always “perfect.”
But, Secillano said, there are legal processes already available to couples on the verge of separation.
He asked the senator to reform the said processes instead of pushing for divorce.
“Why can’t Sen. Hontiveros focus on reforming these processes? They are guaranteed to be legal and constitutional, and she can even make them less tedious and less expensive,” Secillano said.
During a Senate hearing on Tuesday, Hontiveros said the divorce bill is “pro-marriage, pro-family, and pro-children.”
She claimed a divorce bill will provide individuals the chance to “find true and meaningful relationships” as well as “protect children from abuse and rebuild broken families.”
The Catholic Church is opposed to divorce as this could result to more families being destroyed and the failure to protect the sanctity of marriages.
