Staunch Duterte critic and former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV speculated President Rodrigo Duterte could not rid himself of former Customs Bureau Commissioner and now former Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Nicanor Faeldon because the latter might have information damaging to the President.

“Malaki ang possibilidad na alam ni Faeldon ang involvement ni Duterte sa mga illegal na transaction sa Customs at BuCor kaya hindi nya ito malaglag,” Trillanes said in a text message.

Duterte, on Friday, said he still believed in Faeldon, an ex-Marine captain, despite Faeldon’s actions which led to the early release of heinous crimes convicts.

“Faeldon tarong na nga tawo [He is an upright person]. I still believe in him,” Duterte said in a mix of Cebuano and English during the groundbreaking ceremony for a housing project in Naga City, Cebu.

Prior to heading the BuCor, Faeldon was appointed BOC commissioner in 2016, but eventually resigned from his post after he was implicated in the smuggling of P6.4-million worth of shabu shipments from China.

Faeldon again found himself in the center of a controversy, this time over the attempted early release of convicted rapist-murderer Antonio Sanchez from the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) law.

During a hastily organized press conference on Wednesday night, Duterte sidestepped questions on whether he will appoint Faeldon to another government post.

The President had jested that Faeldon might have a suggestion on where he wanted to be assigned next.
