President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has again announced that he will block the franchise renewal of giant media ABS-CBN. He said this at the Oath-Taking of the Newly Appointed Officials Heroes Hall, Malacañang Palace.
The ABS-CBN franchise will expire in March 2020. From now on, only four months will be left.
“If you are expecting na ma-renew ‘yan (franchise), I am sorry. I will see to it that you are out. Ilan kaming mga kandidato (noong 2016 elections) na kinuha niyo ang pera namin but you never aired our (election) propaganda,” according to President Duterte.

The Chief Executive also reminded ABSCBN the aired advertisement of former Senator Antonio Trillanes against him.
“Pero ‘yung propaganda ni Trillanes portraying children, and which is really prohibited act under the rules of the election code and in spite of the fact na may TRO (temporary restraining order) na huwag ninyong ipalabas, pinalabas pa rin ninyo,” added the president.
It is worth noting that also House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano has "personal objections" to ABS-CBN's franchise renewal.
“People like me, I also have some objections [about the extension]. I’ll tell you, this is my personal [opinion], okay?… On one hand I feel that we have to protect the freedom of the press and freedom of expression; on the other hand I feel that there’s certain instances in history, and in the 2016 election, that some sectors or leaders of ABS interfered unjustly… So how do you sort it out? Like right now, we can debate that, and of course, you will stand up for the network but I’d rather have it in a hearing, straight talk, face to face, and talk about it,” said House Speaker Cayetano in an interview.
Under the law, all radio and television companies must obtain a franchise from the congress.
